Materials: 26 cm circum mari, wrapped in turquoise Stranded floss in white, yellow, light, medium and dark orange. Marking thread: thin black thread Prepare an 8-Combination Division |
Using white thread, mark an offset square on each 8-pt center, and then a second offset inner square. Subdivide the inner square with white thread, see diagram to left (pink and blue lines). |
|
Mitsubane Kikkou / Triwings: use 2 threads of white floss to stitch 3 rows of the hexagon in each 6-pt center of the C8. Stitch the wings using 2 threads of each color floss, using Nejiri Kagari, in the following order: yellow, light orange, medium orange, and dark orange.
Flowers: This is a 3 layer flower where each layer uses 3 gradations of orange and each row uses 2 threads of floss. Layer 1: Pin a .5cm diameter circle template to the center to create the inner stitch line, shown as a yellow circle. This layer will create 4 long arms to the corners of the inner square and 4 short arms facing the flat sides of the square. The corners start ¼ down from the inner square to the circle template, start with dark orange floss, stitch down to the next line then up a point 1/3 up the short arm from the template to the edge of the inner square. Continue around the square, repeat using medium orange and then yellow. |
Layer 2: This layer creates 4 flower petals centered on the vertical and horizontal axis. The inner stitch anchors in the center of the long stitches at the inner circle, see diagram to the left. The petals widen and anchor at the edge of the inner square where it crosses a subdivision line, then narrows to a point along the center line of the triangle between the inner square and the offset square lines. Colors for this layer are, in order, dark orange, light orange and yellow.
Layer 3: This layer creates 4 petals that are anchored along the diagonal axis of the original square face. The inner stitch anchors in the center of the short stitches of the first layer; the blue lines in diagram 5 show these petals. The petals widen and are anchored along the inner square ½ way between the layer 2 petals and the center-line of layer 2 petals. The apex of the layer 3 petal is at a point 1/3 the distance between the top of the first layers apex and the edge of the triwing. Colors for this layer are, in order, yellow, medium orange and dark orange.
The last step to this flower is to stitch a line of dark orange along the first offset square; the stitch goes under the petals. Repeat for all 6 faces. |
