General Directions for Spindles: Place a pin at the midpoint between each 8 and 4 thread intersection. Do not remove pins until the ball is complete. 12 open tsumu kagari spindles will be stitched. They will interlock, nejiri style. Each spindle will be stitched with 1 round of blue metallic, 6 rounds of a single pearl cotton color and 1 round of blue metallic. | |
Spindles 1 – 4: Locate the north and south poles. Spindles 1 and 2 will be stitched in purple. Referring to diagram 1, stitch from 1 to 2 and back to 1, going around pins a and b. Repeat until spindle is complete. Repeat on the opposite side of the ball. Using blue pearl cotton repeat the above steps on the last 2 N/S pole marking lines. | |
Spindles 5 & 6: Rotate the ball so the points of the first 4 spindles are on the left and right, and the “new” NP and SP are in the center of the purple spindles. Spindles 5 & 6 will be stitched in dark green. Referring to diagram 2, stitch from 1 to 2, going over the purple and blue bands, around pin a and under the blue and purple bands. Stitch from 2 to 1 repeating the pattern by going over the purple and blue bands, around pin b and under the blue and purple bands. Repeat until the spindle is complete. Repeat on the opposite side of the ball. |
Spindles 7 & 8: Keeping the same NP and SP as for spindles 5 & 6, rotate the ball so the point of spindles 1 - 4 are facing you. Spindles 7 & 8 are stitched in light green. Stitch from 1 to 2, going under the purple and blue bands, around pin a and over the blue and purple bands. Repeat this pattern, going around pin b, back to pin 1. Repeat until the spindle is complete. Repeat on the opposite side of the ball. | ||
Spindles 9 & 10 will be stitched
in pink. Referring to diagram 3, stitch from 1 to 2,
alternating between going over and under bands. Go over
dark green, under blue, over light green, under purple, around
pin a and over purple, under light green, over blue and under
dark green Repeat this pattern, going around pin b and
back to 2. Repeat until the spindle is complete.
Repeat on the opposite side of the ball. Keeping the same NP and SP as for spindles 9 & 10, rotate the ball so the point of spindles 5 - 8 are facing you. Spindles 11 & 12 will be stitched in yellow. Stitch as with spindles 9 & 10, starting at 1 and going over blue and under dark green. |
