Materials: 30 cm circumference mari, wrapped in ecru. For stitching: Caron Watercolors overdyed, separated (similar to pearl cotton #5) in dark indigo and medium indigo blues. Medium gold thread. Marking thread in fine gold metallic Prepare a 10-Combination Division |
Design is made in three sections: kagome / basket weave bands, tsumu / spindles woven into basket bands, and kiku woven into basket bands. Spindles: In each diamond of the C10
division (pts. 1-2-3-4 in Working Diagram), work tsumu
kagari interwoven into the basket weave THREADS (see photo
above): Use 1 strand. Located Pts a and b in Diamond 1-2-3-4,
which are 1/2 distance from corner of diamond to center of
diamond. Begin at Pt a; to the right of center line 2-4, pass
over 2 threads, under 2 threads, over 2 threads; stitch at Pt b.
Repeat over 2, under 2, over 2 threads to return to Pt a. Repeat
this sequence for one more stitching row. Stitch 2 rows in same
manner but passing under 2, over 2, under 2 threads. Stitch 2
more rows in same manner, using 1st weave sequence of over 2,
under 2, over 2. Work 1 complete Spindle in each diamond on ball. Kiku: In each 10pt center, work kiku design using shitagake kagari, interwoven into basket weave THREADS as follows: Begin at Pt C of Working Diagram (1/2 distance pentagon center to corner on long leg of marking threads), which will be bottom point of Kiku. Pass thread over 2, under 2, over 2, under 2 threads, take stitch close to center on short leg of marking thread. Pass under 2, over 2, under 2, over 2 threads of basket weave band, take stitch for kiku bottom point same distance as Pt c. Repeat around.
