TemariKai Temari-a-Month Photo Calendar 2011 Edition
August 2011 Call for Photos; last date for submission for the 2012 consideration is October 31, 2011

The Temarikai Photo Calendar has become an annual tradition  -  herewith is the Call for Photos for the Temari-A-Month Calendar 2012. Get your thinking and creative caps on - whip up some temari and break out the camera. Remember we are looking for high-quality, showcased temari (take special care in choosing the background, which should be uncluttered and show off your temari, and really only the temari - see this year's edition for examples) photos, of at least 200 pixel resolution and 81/2 x 11 inches finished size.  Stitchers of all levels of experience are invited (and urged!) to submit - this is not just about the most involved or intricate temari. It's about a great photo of a well-done temari. from beginner to advanced. We're looking for a wide range of designs, skills, etc. Take advantage of seasonal settings, colors, etc.... shots taken outdoors can be stunning. Think of holiday themes throughout the year.... the process of making temari....  let your imagination help and guide but remember - the focus MUST be on the actual temari. While props can set up some great photos, they should not overwhelm the temari or take over the photo. If you have submitted in the past, whether your photos have been used before or not, you are still urged to submit for 2011. Haven't sent any in before? Then go for it!

The calendars are produced professionally - this is not an in-house/desktop project. We need 12 or 13  81/2 x 11 inch photos to make it work each year.... . They need to be good quality digital images (only digital as the images must all be delivered to the publisher in digital format) with a resolution of at least 200 pixels, preferably 300. That means that your image must be of sufficient digital photo quality to withstand the enlargement to 81/2 x 11 so you will want to be shooting at least 4x6 or 5x8 inch size. With today's digital cameras that actually is pretty easy as long as you take your time on the shot and check your camera settings. Keep in mind things like background, surroundings and those sorts of details. Going to print at 8 x 10 inches requires fine detail. These high quality calendars are printed on glossy 100 lb text weight paper in full bleed dynamic color. They measure 8.5" x 11" when folded, and 11" x 17" when hanging on your wall. That means that your photos have to be clear, and crisp enough to be able to enlarged to full page size. Be sure that your camera or scanner settings are for images for this size... reducing an image and maintaining quality is quite doable - but enlarging a photo usually does not give acceptable results for this type of printing. Glossy paper and large size needs good, crisp, clear shots. Be sure that you are not just shooting "snap shots", or email shots.

Those folks whose photos are selected for use in the 2012 edition will have listed credit in the calendar; one name will be drawn at random from the used submitted entries to receive a free calendar. all the others will be able to purchase one calendar at cost, plus shipping.

You have until October 31, 2010 to send submissions (they must be received by that date). They may of course, be emailed. Please separate multiple image submissions into smaller groups. I have a broadband internet connection so can handle a large file transfer by email if you can, but use some common sense in the number of files being sent at once. You can also burn your images to CD and send by postal mail - just email me for the postal address to send them to if you wish to do this. Be sure that you are not write-protecting your images when you burn them - I need to be able to open and edit them. This is not a guarantee that there will be a calendar; we need at least 13 usable photos.  The calendar will be available for direct order and shipping by and to you in the mid fall, well in time for holiday gifting. Calendars are also able to be "drop shipped"  directly to gift recipients if you wish.

Please NOTE:  All photo files submitted MUST be file names with  YOUR name, and if you are submitting more than one image, then a sequential number. For example if Ginny Stitcher is going to submit photos the digital image files must be named : GinnyStitcher1.jpg , Ginny Stitcher2.jpg  , etc. I get many, many submissions and keeping track of them becomes wild if I have to rename every image being submitted - unfortunately if files are not appropriately named we'll not be able to consider them for inclusion in the selection process.

By submitting your photo(s) for consideration, you attest that you are the owner of the original photo (see photos and copyright info below) and grant permission for Temarikai.com/PuffinStuff Inc. to use your photo(s) in the publication and distribution of the Temarikai.com Photo Calendar. You will retain joint copyright of the photo - it will not be used by Temarikai.com/PuffinStuff Inc for any other purpose. Submit your photo using this email link (the email is set up to let me know it's a Calendar Photo) and attach your image(s) to it:

Email Temari Calendar Photo Submission

You may submit as many images as you like, but any given person may have only one image in the calendar.  Everyone is eligible each year to submit images for consideration, regardless of whether you have been chosen to be included in the calendar in past years. Each year is a new one!

The Temari Photo Calendar will available for purchase during fall 2011, in time for holiday orders and gifts from the The Temari Shop  on Cafe Press or assisted order - please check back here, or be sure that you are subscribed to TemariKai News for updated info. And as has become tradition, a percentage of the purchases will be forwarded to the Sarah's Book Project. Go get stitching, think about composing photos, dust off the collection and break out the camera....  have fun!

Do you own the photo? If you took it, yes. Under copyright law, the photographer owns the photo and rights to it, regardless of what is IN the photo.
Technically from the copyright perspective, the photo can be of any temari - if you took the photo, it is your photo to do with what you want (think of it this way - this is how paparazzi make their living. Celebs are not happy about being photoed and those photos being sold, but this is why they cannot stop the paparazzi photographers - the paps own the photos to sell to whomever).  HOWEVER - for the purposes of the Temarikai Photo Calendar, photos must be of temari that you have personally stitched. They do not have to be original/personal designs - they may be of temari you stitched from any inspiration (books, online, etc). Once you have stitched the temari, it is your temari. Take the photo, and it's your photo.
